DOHA, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- The main building of the International Horticultural Expo 2023 in Qatar's capital Doha has broken a Guinness World Record for having the world's largest green roof that spans an area of 4,031 sqm, Qatar's public works authority Ashghal announced in a statement on its website on Saturday.

Mohammed Al Khouri, secretary general of the International Horticultural Expo 2023, said the news, which came on the eve of the opening of the expo that is scheduled to be held from Oct. 2, 2023 to March 28, 2024, will add momentum to the global event.

According to Ashghal, the building was designed to present a model of how can countries with a desert climate like Qatar become a green one, demonstrating a top-notch horticultural standards in a hot climate.

The project also aimed to provide visitors with an interactive experience with nature and modern urban structure with Qatari characteristics. The roof of the main building was planted with pennisetum, dahlia and green grass, it added.

Jaralla Mohammed Al Marri, manager of Ashghal's Buildings Projects Department, said the Guinness title was "a new global recognition" of Ashghal's projects.
